The Benefits of Youth Sports

Sports can bring mental, social, and emotional benefits to those who participate. It allows kids to develop physical skills, increase activity, make friends, learn teamwork, improve self-esteem, learn the importance of sportsmanship, and of course, have fun.

Investing in fields provides:

  • Safety

Reduces the risk of injuries from uneven surfaces, holes, debris. It also provides proper traction to prevent slips and falls.

  • Performance & Skill Development

Allows players to participate and compete on a consistent, high-quality surface. Helps with accurate ball movement and predictable play conditions.

  • Enjoyment & Engagement

Creates a more enjoyable experience, encouraging continued participation. Enhances motivation and enthusiasm for playing sports.

  • Health & Fitness

Encourages physical activity in a safe and structured environment. Reduces the likelihood of overuse injuries by providing proper surface support.

  • Community & Team Spirit

Attracts more families and fans, fostering a sense of community. Provides a venue for events, tournaments, and local gatherings.

  • Longevity of the Facility

Reduces long-term repair costs by preventing major damage. Extends the usability of the field, ensuring it remains functional for years.

  • Environmental Benefits

Proper maintenance helps with drainage, reducing flooding and erosion. Healthy turf can contribute to air quality and temperature control.

  • Fairness & Competition

Ensures a level playing field for all teams by providing consistent conditions. Reduces the impact of poor field conditions on game outcomes.

  • Sponsorships & Funding

Well-kept fields attract sponsorships, donations, and investments from local businesses. Demonstrates community commitment to youth sports, encouraging future funding.

Our Stance on Real Grass vs. Artificial Turf

At Valley Kid Sports, our intention is to prioritize the use of real grass for our fields, as it promotes a natural playing environment that benefits athletes' safety and performance. We recognize, however, that there are situations where artificial turf may offer practical advantages, such as in areas that are not optimal for growing grass or high usage rates that could compromise the integrity of natural grass. By maintaining an open-minded approach, we aim to make informed decisions that serve the best interests of players, ensuring optimal playing conditions while also considering long-term sustainability and maintenance feasibility.

 Real Grass

Real grass is best for natural aesthetics and environmental benefits. It requires more ongoing maintenance and is susceptible to weather-related issues. It is ideal for less-intensive use or areas with adequate water resources and mild climates.

  • Grass fields are visually appealing and contribute to a more natural, aesthetically pleasing environment.

  • Initial installation of a natural grass field is often cheaper than artificial turf, depending on the site and existing infrastructure. Though ongoing maintenance can be costly.

  • While ongoing maintenance is required, it may be less intensive and expensive over time compared to replacing artificial turf that can degrade after several years. Consistent maintenance includes mowing, watering, fertilizing, aerating, and reseeding - especially in high-traffic areas such as goal boxes and sidelines. These tasks can be costly, labor-intensive, and dependent on weather conditions.

  • Grass fields stay cooler in warm weather because the natural grass provides shade and moisture, reducing the heat island effect commonly seen in artificial turf.

  • Grass fields support local ecosystems, improving air quality, providing habitats for insects, and absorbing rainwater to reduce runoff. They also require significant water resources, which can be unsustainable, especially in hotter regions like ours.

  • Grass can offer a softer surface compared to turf, which may reduce the likelihood of certain types of injuries, such as abrasions or burns from sliding. However, it can also develop uneven patches, causing bumps or dips, which may affect the quality of play.

  • Grass fields are vulnerable to weather conditions, such as heavy rainfall, which can lead to muddy, unusable surfaces or poor playing conditions. In climates like ours, they may suffer from heat stress and drought.

 Artificial Turf

Artificial turf is best for high-traffic fields and all-weather use with minimal maintenance. It does come with higher initial costs, but lower long-term upkeep. It also brings environmental and health concerns, and the field’s surface temperature can be problematic in hot climates.

  • Some players and spectators prefer the look and feel of natural grass. Additionally, while artificial turf has improved, it can still feel less natural to play on, with certain sports experiencing a different bounce or roll than on natural grass.

  • Installation of artificial turf is typically much more expensive than natural grass, with costs that can range from several hundred thousand dollars to over a million for a full-size field. Although installation costs are higher, over the lifespan of the field, artificial turf may prove more cost-effective due to lower maintenance and water requirements.

  • Artificial turf requires minimal maintenance. No mowing, watering, or fertilizing is needed, and it maintains its appearance year-round. It is highly durable and can withstand constant use. It can handle heavy foot traffic and extreme weather conditions without significant degradation.

Though, despite its durability, artificial turf has a finite lifespan (typically 8-12 years), after which it needs to be replaced. The surface may start to show wear and tear, especially in high-use areas like goal boxes.

  • Artificial turf can become extremely hot in the summer, sometimes reaching temperatures of over 150°F (65°C), which can be uncomfortable for players and may increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Due to the materials used, artificial turf retains heat more effectively, which can make playing conditions uncomfortable, especially in sunny or warm climates.

  • Artificial turf eliminates the need for regular watering, which is beneficial in regions with water scarcity or drought conditions.

It is made from petroleum-based materials (usually nylon or polypropylene), which are not biodegradable and can contribute to plastic pollution. The installation and disposal of turf can have negative environmental impacts.

The infill material (often made of crumb rubber, which is shredded tires) can release harmful chemicals over time, raising health concerns.

Artificial turf eliminates the need for electricity-powered irrigation systems, providing energy savings in some cases.

  • Artificial turf provides a smooth, uniform surface with fewer variations, reducing the risk of injuries from uneven terrain. Though some studies suggest that artificial turf can lead to a higher risk of certain injuries, particularly joint and muscle injuries, due to the harder surface and reduced shock absorption compared to natural grass.

While artificial turf has improved, it can still feel less natural to play on, with certain sports experiencing a different bounce or roll than on natural grass.

  • Artificial turf can be used in all weather conditions. It doesn’t get muddy or waterlogged, making it ideal for rainy climates and ensuring year-round usability.
